Filippovs' trading house and Centralnaya Hotel

Moscow, Russia

Ksenia Kandalintseva

For years this building, which is today hidden behind the faux facade, has been the gem of Tverskaya Street. In mid 19th century, this property owned by the noble family of Saltykovs was bought by the famous entrepreneur Ivan Filippov. And so he opened a bakery and a cafe frequented by the entire Moscow. In 1891–1897, his heir Dmitry redecorated the facade in a more pompous and eclectic way while in 1911 architect Eichenwald rebuilt the fancy Luks hotel that took the left wing. In 1934, the house was overbuilt again to become Centralnaya hotel. Now it's under renovation.
