The Buda Hills are certainly worth visiting. Some tourists manage to walk all over Pest without learning what treasures are kept in Buda. First of all, an old funicular runs here. Though the ascent is about only two minutes, the trip is rather entertaining. Second, you will enjoy a spectacular view of the city. Third, the palace features the national gallery where you can get a full idea of Hungarian art which was collected here piece by piece from other museums in 1975.
The medieval collection is worth seeing, especially the painting Meeting of Mary and Elizabeth by Master MS, a gothic artist of the 16th century. The painting tells a story of Mary learning that her rather aged childless sister is pregnant, after which she comes to see her. Elizabeth gave birth to John the Baptist. Another four paintings by Master MS are kept in a wonderful museum of christian art in Esztergom. The 20th century hall features works by cult Hungarian artists, such as Rippl-Rónai József and Munkácsy Mihály.
