Christmas Mass

Budapest, Hungary

Anastasia Chukovskaya

In the 19th century Hungarians used to go to the Mass with a small chair to get on it and spot witches and spirits hiding among their neighbors. Later, girls mounted it to spot their future husbands.
All churches in town arrange Christmas Masses and you are free to join – come thirty minutes ahead to secure a seat. It begins midnight Dec 24 and lasts for about an hour. Dress warm and guys, remember – no hats. And hope you realize that Saint Stephen's in Buda and St Matthias in Pest will be packed.
