Frank Hearts Berlin
Berlin is a Mecca for vintage lovers and you will find big outlets and small boutiques spread out all over town. Every district has their own style as they cater to a different clientele. You could say Mitte is more designer vintage, Prenzlauer Berg more retro and Kreuzberg more bargain bin. For our new vintage path we are taking a closer look at the best shops in hip Neukölln. The shops here cater for a clearly younger crowd that is looking for those trendy looks from contemporary fashion blogs and magazines.
Rag And Boneman
Vintage shop Rag And Boneman has a quite contemporary and modern style both for their pieces and their interior. Current trends of fashion will be recreated from old pieces from the 80s and 90s. The selection is mostly for girls and includes also shoes, bags, sunglasses and jewellery. Between mostly low priced vintage you will also find the occasional designer vintage piece. As a little supplement the shop offers some pastries and cakes as well as drinks to their customers. Shop owner Maggie is also quite active in creating her own little events in the store such as exhibitions, dinners and little parties.
Calypt
When you look at the self-styled editorials of Calypt you will probably be surprised that all of the designs are vintage. The looks they put together from their store archive are very contemporary and look like fresh out of a new fashion magazine with the latest designer clothes. But in fact everything is vintage, mostly apparel and sportswear from the 90s. With their selection they perfectly reflect the current fashion trends, so every young fashion hipster heart will get lucky here.
Veist Kleidergeschichten
The small shop Veist sells more than just vintage. Every piece they have in their selection tells a little story which makes shopping here an interesting and personal experience. For different occasions such as Carnivale, Halloween or New Years Eve they rearrange their pieces accordingly to match the occasion and also prepare special events with styling and make-up for their customers. Their selection is a wild mix of different decades including 70s, 80s and 90s designs. It's definitely a nice sentiment to keep the story of the previous owner attached to the garments.
Pequod Books
Neukölln brings together a very mixed crowd with young people from all over the world. As they mostly don't speak German it's a little hard for them to find literature either in English or their own language. Luckily Pequod Books offers a great selection of second hand books not only in English but also in many other languages of the world. The little store is like a treasure chest for international literature. Browsing through the shelves in your own language will definitely have some surprises for you in store.
Bullys Bakery
If you are a cake lover then Bullys Bakery is pretty much a must-go in Neukölln as they make some of the best cakes in the whole district. The cute cafe on the corner has an ever changing offering of different cakes, but most definitely there will always be at least one type of cheesecake. They also have fruit pies, cupcakes and brownies and occasionally also original cakes such as milk rice cake. Their coffee is also quite nice which makes this a really good choice for a short break in the afternoon. Their cool wall decoration with the illustrations of hands preparing dough combined with some flower boxes and the lovely blue upcycled vintage chairs also makes the place look very charismatic.
Vintage Galore
Vintage Galore is a brand new vintage furniture store at Sanderstraße a few doors down from Sing Blackbird. It’s not like any of those cramped and dusty second hand furniture shops with cheap knock-offs and granny’s old stuff. It feels more like a high-end design boutique. The specialty here are 60s Scandinavian design furniture in teak wood and lamps. They also have a small but great vintage clothes section with a lot of menswear. The amazing thing about the store is the quality of the products. Many of them are refurbished by hand which makes them look as good as new. Owner Erik says that teak wood pieces from the 60s have always been a passion for him and with this store he turned his hobby into a profession.
Sing Blackbird
Vintage cafe and shop Sing Blackbird is one of the oldest and most established ones in the area of Neukölln. Their selection is focused on feminine to girly clothes from the 80s and 90s with lots of little accessories, shoes and jewellery. They also have a small menswear section with the typical shirts and sweaters with patterns. In their cafe they offer a lot of healthy snacks, breakfast and also a couple of vegan options. Also watch out for their regular vintage flea markets where they bring together some other vintage vendors and private sellers.
The Black Lodge
The Black Lodge is a small hip bar in the heart of the popular Kreuzkölln area. The front of the place is pretty much in the style of an old Whiskey bar while the back part will remind you of a cosy living room. They have DJs playing on popular nights and the occasional special events. The crowd is quite international, think the young and hip of the neighborhood who came from all over the world to enjoy the low-key yet creative lifestyle of Berlin.
