Oi Casa Grande’s sleek and polished exterior is a modern contrast to the more gaudy, traditional edifices of some of Rio’s other theater houses. The theater first opened its doors in 1966 with a show called Chuva de estrelas (Rain of stars). It has since been seen as a vital beacon of Rio’s performance culture. In 1985, it was recognized for it’s fight against censorship, especially during the dictatorship. When Carioca’s want to see a grand show, this is where they come. Located in Leblon, it’s in close proximity to premium pre-theater dining. The theater has staged super-sized international hits like the Brazilian version of Hair and The Sound of Music. And many of the country's greatest artists have performed on their stages like Caetano Veloso, Vinicius de Moraes, Elis Regina, Gal Costa, Chico Buarque, Lázaro Ramo, and Wagner Moura.
