One can learn a lot about Niterói from its nickname, Cidade Sorriso. The city, just minutes from Rio, is considered one of the best places to live in Brazil and is ranked as having one of the highest quality of life standards. Niterói is probably most known by tourists for the MAC museum, but it’s beaches are also a strong draw, especially cherished by Niterói residents. Stunning beauties like, Itacoatiara, are surrounded by untouched vegetation and mountainous formations. Itacoatiara, or Itacoa as it’s called locally, can be reached by bus in one hour or car 30 minutes east of downtown Niterói. Many water sports are enjoyed at Itacoa like rock surfing and surfing. It is a popular location for international surfer’s competitions. Visitors many want to bring their own beach blanket and snacks, because depending on which part of the beach you enjoy, there are not many services available and items for sale in comparison to Rio.
