The Theatro Municipal is a centerpiece of downtown Rio. When President Obama came to speak in Rio, he came here. The theater, which opened it’s doors in the early 1900’s is one of the most important and grand buildings in Rio. The building is etched in gold and is crowned by three large domes. The interior is decorated in Louis XVI style grandeur with large chandeliers, columns and paintings. Perhaps the most opulence inside the theater can be found on it’s stages. Theatro Municipal attracts the most skilled ballet, opera, and symphonic artists around the globe. If there is not a performance scheduled during your trip to Rio, you can still attend a guided tour Tuesday-Friday.
