Caixa Cultural Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Doni Clemons

Although the Caixa in Caixa Cultural was given because of it’s primary financial supporter, the name is perfectly fitting because the space is literally a cultural box, which is what caixa cultural translates as in Portuguese. Caixa Cultural brings three art galleries, two movie theaters, a theater arena, and a library to the center of the city all under one roof. All for free every day. Caixa Cultural's programming is as varied as their space. From the shows of Joan Miro to Di Cavalcanti, Caixa Cultural celebrates both international and national artists often using multi-media that takes over the entire “box.” There are often smaller festivals of film and local artists that are promoted as well. It's comfy, sofa-filled cafe is one of the best kept secrets of the area. Free art, wifi, and air conditioning? The perfect formula for taking a break during downtown sightseeing.
